George of Denmark (1653-1708) - Find a Grave Memorial

Prince of Denmark. British Royal Consort. Born at Copenhagen, Denmark, the younger son of Frederik III Oldenburg, King of Denmark and Sophie Amelie Prinzessin von Braunschweig-Lüneburg. The Protestant prince was considered a suitable match for Princess Anne of Great Britain, daughter of James II, King of Great Britain. They were married in July 1683 at St. James's Palace, London. He was naturalized as a British subject in September 1683. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter in January 1684. He was created Baron of Wokingham, Duke of Cumberland, and Earl of Kendal in April 1689. Between May 1684 and January 1700 his wife suffered through twelve pregnancies which resulted in stillbirths, and another five which resulted in live births but ended in the premature deaths of the children. Though dogged by ill-health himself, he was the queen's mainstay throughout this period. He was styled as Prince George of Great Britain from April 1702 when his wife ascended the British throne as Queen Anne. He served as Lord High Admiral from 1702 to 1708 and proved himself to be an able administrator and competent military strategist. In September of 1708, the prince apparently suffered a severe asthma attack from which he never truly recovered. He died a month later and was buried at Westminster Abbey, London.
