Scott was the son of Edward and Martha Kirkpatrick and was a fifth generation Washingtonian. He spent his early childhood years in Frederick Maryland and moved to the Sterling Virginia area in 1985. He attended Sully Elementary School, Sterling Middle School and graduated from Park View High School in Sterling before studying Political Science and Creative Writing at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale. During his teen years, Scott became a talented actor and a powerful and prolific poet competing locally in Slam Poetry readings. He won the Washington, DC Slam Poetry contest in 2000 at age 19, and toured with other winners from around the country, competing nationally that summer. September 11th deeply affected Scott and he wanted very much to do something to help defend his country. He joined the Infantry in 2003. Much to everyone's surprise, Scott loved the Army. After graduating from Basic Training and then Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, Scott returned home on leave and proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Christy Blasingame. They were married four days later. They returned to Scott's new posting at Ft. Stewart in Savannah, Georgia. He excelled at all aspects of his new life and hoped to fight in Afghanistan, but instead was deployed to Sadr City, Baghdad in January 2005. His role there was as a driver of Bradley Fighting Vehicles until he requested to be a foot soldier. He always wanted to be right in the thick of things. Scott's first deployment ended in December 2005, and he returned home. Fifteen months later on May 11th, 2007 Scott's brigade was redeployed to Arab Jabour as the last of the five brigades in the "surge." By now he was promoted to Sergeant and was highly respected by his subordinates, peers and officers. After the Army, he was planning to move to Austin, Texas, where he would pursue his education and become a teacher, and finish writing his novel. He is survived by his wife, Christy Kirkpatrick; his parents, Edward and Martha Kirkpatrick; his brother, Kevin Kirkpatrick; his uncles, Bruce Deppa and Roy Deppa; Aunts, Ellen Jojola, Susan Burch, Mary Beth Diehl, Clare Kirkpatrick, and Judy Kirkpatrick; a great-Aunt, Lois Perry; and numerous loving cousins, family and friends.
