Jackie served in the 38th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Army Infantry Division. He had been in Korea for five months, when on January 10, 1951 he sustained a head wound. He also suffered severe frostbite on his feet. He was airlifted to Hawaii, then later Ft. Campbell, KY. He died at U.S. Army Hospital in Ft. Knox KY, of a subdural abcess caused by shrapnel in his brain (source: death certificate). He was 19 years old.
