Harry fell in love with Belle Harvey, but because they were cousins their parents wouldn't let them get married so both of them married older people. Belle married Jack Scanlon who was 14 years her senior and Harry married Maud Scott who was not only older but a rather plain looking woman.
Harry looked like his mother with blond curly hair, blue eyes and a sunny disposition. He became an engineer on the railroad, an important position in those days and his parents were very proud of him.
During a run out of Needles, California the train went onto a wash-out and derailed and Harry was scalded and died later as a result of this.
This tragedy at the early age of 25 was something his parents never got over. It was enhanced by the fact the railway company had wired them that Harry wasn't seriously injured and they needn't come out, though his wife left to be near him. Soon after her arrival Harry became delirious and began calling for his parents and his wife sent a telegram asking them to come. They made it as far as Kansas City where a telegram reached them telling them of his death.
