Unfortunately, the premature deaths of her siblings, left her an only child. After several proposed marriage contracts collapsed, her father finally arranged a marriage to Louis, Duke of Touraine, the son of King Charles V of France and brother of the reigning king, Charles VI. As part of her dowry, she received the county of Vertus, the city of Asti, cash and jewelry. If she failed to produce a male heir, she would also inherit the Visconti dominions. She finally arrived in France in September of 1388 with the formal marriage occurring in August of 1389. Because of court intrigue, Valentine was exiled from the court and left Paris. The marriage resulted in eight children. The first three boys and one daughter died in infancy. Son Charles would become the father of King Louis XII of France, and was also a medieval poet. She outlived her husband by only a year. It is thought her grief over his assassination fatally exacerbated an illness.
