Clara was the daughter of Joseph Converse Stowell, a carpenter and Civil War veteran, and Jane C. Sweetzer Stowell. She grew up in Hartford.

She had big, brown eyes and very white hair later in life. She was a good housekeeper and a very good cook.

Clara's story is complicated.

She was wed twice. Her first husband was Newton Howard Moulton, whom she married on Sep. 20, 1888 in Hartford. They had four children together: Grayce Belle in 1888, Olive Cornelia in 1891, Howard Newton in 1894 and Reginald Lane in 1898. The baby died at seven months old.

Clara was a very cultured woman who had an elegant sense of style. She was always in fashion. She loved to wear large-brimmed hats with flowers, and she always dressed very colorfully. She could play the piano by ear.

She was unhappy being a farm wife. Sometime around 1905, she left the family and moved to New York City.

Clara then married Charles Roland 'Wally' Waters, and they had a son, Walter Roland, in 1909. He was called by his middle name.

The couple enjoyed travelling to Bermuda with their son.

Clara kept in contact with her older children, but she asked them to call her 'Aunt Clara'.

It would be easy to question Clara's actions. The more I experience life, however, the more sympathy I have for her. I cannot condone how she treated her older children, but I can try to understand.

She passed away at home at 2438 Morris Avenue in the Bronx.

Clara had nine grandchildren and 64 additional descendants as of early 2008.

Many thanks to Barb (Floral Designer), who so graciously searched out Clara's plot for me and took a number of photos.

Her resting place doesn't have a marker.
