Educator. He is recognized as a British historian and educator, who was the Master of St. John's College, from 1933 to 1952. Born into a family of seven siblings, his father was the headmaster of Bethany School, where he attended school. After receiving private early schooling, he was admitted to the University of Cambridge and entered St John's College in 1899. At the college, he became President of the Nonconformist Union. After graduation, he became a Fellow of St John's in 1906, followed by a succession of teaching appointments within the university. After being Master of St John's, he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1939 to 1941. In 1947, he was elected an honorary fellow of Trinity College Dublin. In 1940, his oil-on-canvas portrait was painted by Henry Lamb and is exhibited at St. Johns College. As a college historian, he was co-author from 1902 to 1912 of a 12-volume series "The Cambridge Modern History." Unaccompanied, he authored "The Cambridge Modern History: The Reformation" Volume 2 of the series. In 1935, he published "John Fisher," the biography of a British educator. His lecture notes, speeches, and other professional papers are archived at the University of Cambridge.
