Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a carpenter, Port-Daniel born Édouard Gagnon entered the Major Seminary of Montreal before joining the Compagnie des Prêtres de Saint-Sulpice, being ordained priest on August 15, 1940. Furthering his studies at the Université Laval in Quebec, as of 1945, he taught moral theology and canon law at named Grand Seminary of Montreal. Head of the Major Seminary of Saint Boniface from 1954 till 1960, he was elected provincial of the Society of Saint-Sulpice for Canada, Japan and Latin America in 1966, holding the office until 1970. In the meantime, Pope Paul VI appointed him bishop of the diocese of St. Paul, Alberta, on February 19, 1969, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following March 25. Appointed vice president and eventually president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, he was transferred to the titular archbishopric see of Iustiniana Prima on July 7, 1983 on his appointment as pro-president of the Pontifical Council for the Family. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of May 25, 1985 with the deaconry of Sant'Elena fuori Porta Prenestina. Opting for the order of cardinal priests at the title of San Marcello on January 29, 1996, he served furthermore as president of the Pontifical Council for the Family between May 27, 1985 and November 8, 1990, prior to his appointment as president of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses on January 3, 1991. Named officer of the Order of Canada in 1993, Gagnon was the cardinal patron of the Militia Templi and a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than fifty years. Passing away on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Montreal, his solemn funeral mass was held at the local Notre Dame Basilica on Tuesday, September 4, prior to interment in the crypt located beneath the main altar of the chapel of Montreal's Grand Seminary.
