Son of William Giles Goddard and Charlotte Rhoda Ives, who with his brother, Maj. William Goddard in 1850 established the company, Goddard Brothers, Agents, managers for the Lonsdale and Hope companies, part of a prosperous textile manufacturing business owned by Brown & Ives. On 19 Oct 1853 he married Anna Elizabeth Fearing.
