Joshua was born in Sumner County, TN, Is suppose to have lost his mother at an early age (since the person I have listed as his mom died when Joshua was about 30 perhaps that isn't his mother or somewhere dates are incorrect, I will need to correct either when I find documentation) and his father moved him to Arkansas. After a year he moved again to Berry County, Missouri where Joshua was schooled for six years. He them returned to his father's farm for another six years and then back to his home he had while in Missouri where he stayed until 1850. After that Joshua went to Independence, Missouri where he met up with and joined a Government train heading to Fort Laramine. At this time Joshua has become a Teamster. In Fort Laramine he hooks up with a train of Mormons heading to Salt Lake City, Utah, there he stayed for the Winter. The following Spring he left Utah for California where he ended up in Georgetown. El Dorado County, CA in June of 1851. He stayed there and mined for a couple of years. In 1853 he again moved, this time to San Jose, Santa Clara, CA where he worked on many ranches until 1870. Joshua in his adventures once owned and operated a ferry service on the Stanislaus River, hence why in some notes you will find him refered to as Captain. In 1870 Joshua made yet another move, this time to Contra Costa County, CA. He bought land several miles outside of Pacheco consisting of 305 acres. He farmed and ranched there. Joshua also owned a large amount of land in Bay Point in the same county, about 430 acres.
