Janet Jennings Auchincloss Rutherfurd was the daughter of Hugh Dudley Auchincloss, Jr. and Janet Norton Lee. She was an American socialite and half-sister to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lee Radziwill and Nina Auchincloss Steers. She had a younger brother James Lee Auchincloss and two half brothers Hugh D. Auchincloss III and Thomas Auchincloss. She studied at the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia, and Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, the alma mater of her half-sisters Jacqueline and Lee. She went on to study music history at Sarah Lawrence College.

On July 30, 1966, she married Princeton graduate and financier, Lewis Polk Rutherfurd, in Newport, Rhode Island at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, This is the same church where Jacqueline Bouvier married John F. Kennedy. The couple moved to Hong Kong, where she later founded an overseas chapter of the League of Women Voters. The couple had three children: Lewis, Jr., Andrew, and Alexandra.

When she died of cancer in 1985 at age 39 in a Boston hospital, Jackie Onassis was by her side.
