Cuban Professional Baseball Pioneer. Born on September 5, 1853, in Havana, Cuba, during the struggles for Cuban independence in the late 1880s, he played left field for baseball teams in Havana. He founded the Baseball Havana Club and many people were trained in the practice of the Cuban national sport. He faced all the efforts of the colonialists who wanted to ban the practice of baseball in Cuba and labored diligently on keeping baseball played on the vacant lots in Havana. In 1895, he was arrested by rebel troops for his Libertarian ideas and imprisoned in the African City of Ceuta. There he died of tuberculosis at age 43 on July 5, 1897. Honored as an athlete-patriot, he was posthumously inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
