Ellery Knowles, assistant Grand Forks postmaster died of encephalitis in a hospital at 5:15 PM Tuesday. He was 58 years old.

Ellery Knowles was born Sept 20, 1880 in West Side Iowa, he and his family moved to Deadwood SD in 1888. He married Clara Gilmore in 1903. The family moved to East Grand Forks from Philadelphia about 12 years ago. There Ellery had been in charge of postal savings. Previously he had been employed in the Deadwood SD post office entering service there in 1912.

He was active in music organizations, having served as president of the Northwest Minnesota Singer's Association and as a officer of the East Grand Forks Men's chorus. Ellery was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his wife Clara, three daughters Olive at home, Mrs Louise (Kenneth) Gustafson of Grand Forks and Mrs Helen (Howard) Bosworth of Washington DC; and four sisters Olive Knowles and Helen Culbertson of Deadwood SD, Mrs Matt Anderson of Rapid City SD and Mrs Ed McGivern of Lewiston MT. A nephew Gaylord Zane of Sundance WY.
