Scientist. Known as the Marquis de Condorcet, he was an acclaimed mathematician, Encyclopaedist, former Jacobin and anti-slavery proponent. He opposed the execution of Louis XVI. A warrant was issued for his arrest in 1793 and he went into hiding, only to be captured in 1794 after his Jacobin friends denied him asylum. He died in jail the day after his imprisonment. Entered Pantheon in 1989.
