MARY GARDNER PHILLIPS CATMUR died September 22, 2007. A lifelong Memphian, she was born in 1910 during her father's second term as governor of Tennessee. Her parents were Gov. Malcolm Rice Patterson and Mary Russell Gardner. Ms. Catmur was the widow of Eric A. Catmur and of Charles W. Phillips, and was preceded in death by her brother, Ham Patterson. She leaves a daughter, Mimi Phillips of Memphis; and three step-children, Susan McDowell of Monroe, LA and Alan Catmur and John Catmur, both of Memphis; four grandchildren, David Saxon IV and Christopher L. White (Allison) of Memphis, Robin Saxon of Bozeman, Montana and Sean Saxon (Denise) of Denver; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Catmer was the first society editor of The Commercial Appeal, and in the 1930's was the first public relations officer for American Airlines; her job being to speak at women's groups around the country to persuade women it was safe to fly. A graduate of The Hutchison School, she attended Southwestern (now Rhodes) College, Barnard College atColumbia University and graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. For many years she wrote the "Shop Memphis" and "Memphis Buy-Ways" columns for The Memphis Scimitar. She was employed by the federal government for thirty years and was assistant manager of the Memphis office of the Social Security Administration. Mrs. Catmur was a lifelong member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Rotary Club, the Memphis Country Club, the Tuesday Study Club and served on the boards of the Memphis Brooks Museum and the Memphis Urban League. She was a devoted member of the Wolf River Society and served five terms as its president. Visitation willbe at1 p.m. Monday, September 24 at Idlewild Presbyterian Church with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery (Midtown). The family requests that any donations in her memory be made to Idlewild Presbyterian Church or to the Church Health Center.
