A farmer all his life, he owned or rented farms in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

The funeral of the late John F. McGovern was held this morning [24 Sep 1920] from the home of his son, Joseph, in Vernon Township to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Centralia, at 10 oclock, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by the Reverend Father Donlon, pastor. He also preached a sermon.
The pallbearers were Magnus and John McGovern, Mark Lynch and Ambrose Blake, Alfred Blake and Charles McGovern, relatives of the deceased.
A delegation of the Catholic Order of Foresters of the Centralia Church attended the service in a body.
