Oakland Mayor. A native of New York, Pardee first came to California to try his luck in the Gold Rush. Unsuccessful, he moved to San Francisco and established himself as an eye doctor before eventually building a home in Oakland. In 1871 he was elected to the California State Assembly, serving until 1873, and later served in the California State Senate in 1880. In 1876 he was elected the 18th Mayor of Oakland, serving until 1878. His son, George Cooper Pardee, served as Mayor of Oakland from 1893 to 1895 and Governor of California from 1903 to 1907. The home he built in Oakland was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
