Race Car Driver. During a practice session on the final day of qualifications for the 1949 Indianapolis 500, Metzler lost control of his car in the first turn. He struck the retaining wall and suffered critical head and chest injuries. He never regained consciousness and lost his struggle for life in the intensive care unit of Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital. Metzler served with the Engineers in New Guinea in World War II.
