Mildred's grave marker and death certificate say she was born in 1893. However, page 51 of North Carolina's FIRST LADIES lists her birth year as 1894.

Mildred was born in Statesville, but her family moved to Greensboro when she was a baby. She attended Greensboro College for 2 years and Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA. She taught 2nd grade in Greensboro until she married the mayor of Gastonia, Robert Gregg Cherry on June 28, 1921 in Greensboro.

Mildred was the First Lady of NC from 1945-1949. Her husband was the 61st Governor of NC. After leaving Raleigh, she and her husband lived in a house that they built at 519 W. Washington St. in Gastonia, NC. They had no children.
