John Gordon served in the Army from 1932-1934.

He married Evelyn Mae Beck on July 4, 1936 in a double wedding ceremony with his sister Marie Reid and her fiancé Harry Kitchen Shoudt. The marriage lasted for 67 years.

John Gordon re-enlisted in the Navy in 1943 for a 2-year stint. He was a Seaman First Class on the aircraft carrier USS Solomons, which conducted operations up and down the west coast, then sailed to Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, and through the Panama Canal to Brazil and Morocco.
