Historian, Literary Editor. A distinguished professor at three major universities, he is considered by most to have been the greatest expert ever on the life and work of Thomas Jefferson. Raised in rural Georgia, he received his undergraduate degree at Emory University in 1910 and a a theology degree from Yale in 1916. After teaching Bible at Randolph-Macon Women's College for a short time he served as a lieutenant in the US Marine Corps from 1917 to 1919 then returned to the classroom, earning his masters and Ph.D. degrees from Yale in 1921 and 1923 respectively. Dr. Malone was in charge of the "Dictionary of American Biography" from 1929 to 1931 during which time he authored a 50 page mini biography of Jefferson then held professorships of history at Yale, Columbia, and twice at the University of Virginia. He was also director of the Harvard University Press from 1936 to 1943, editor of the "Political Science Quarterly" from 1953 to 1958, and the author of "The Public Life of Thomas Cooper" (1926), "Saints in Action" (1939), and "Empire for Liberty" (1960). His undoubted magnum opus, however, was "Jefferson and His Time" published in six volumes with separate individual titles between 1948 and 1981 and considered by most scholars to be the definitive study of Mr. Jefferson. For his work Dr. Malone was awarded the Pulitizer Prize in 1975 and in 1983 was presented the Medal of Freedom by President Reagan. He died of the effects of advanced age. Today "Jefferson and His Time" remains in print, still and probably forever, along with Merrill Peterson's 1970 "Thomas Jefferson & The New Nation", the gold standard of Jeffersonian historiography. Interestingly, the 50 page piece from the late 1920s also continues to be available and is sold at the Monticello Gift Shop.
