Son of George W. Hoy and his wife, Sarah Lovejoy (Root) Hoy. Egbert married Gertrude M. Hodgkins on 10 June 1896 in Chicago. Gertrude was the daughter (possibly adopted) of Henry F. and Jane Minerva Hodgkins.

Egbert worked in the field of advertising and publishing, with such trade magazines as "National Builder" and "American Box Maker". His father and several brothers had long been in the construction industry.

Egbert and Gertrude adopted a daughter, Arline G., who later married Harold Seebach. Arline worked for the Chicago Times, and Chicago Aerial Industries. Arline was survived by her two daughters.
