Anglo-Saxon Monarch. The son of King Aethelwulf and his queen, Osburga. He married Ealswitha of Mercia in 868, and succeeded his brother Aethelred in 871. Known as one of the greatest kings ever to rule mankind, his reign began amidst devasting viking raids. He defended his kingdom effectively, formulated a code of laws, and instituted a dramatic rebirth of scholastic and religious activity, as well as the arts. Alfred was not only a successful military leader, but a scholar as well, who translated Latin texts into the Anglo-Saxon language. The "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle," the record of the English race, was inspired by Alfred. He is the only monarch in the history of England to be referred to as "the Great." He died at the age of 50.
