Legitimate son of King Canute & his second wife, Emma, Hardicanute became King of Denmark on his father's death in 1035 & was in Denmark when his half-brother, Harold Harefoot, claimed the throne. He was in the process of invading England when news of Harefoot's death reached him. After a brief reign, his step-mother's son Edward was named his successor.
