Medieval English Clergyman. He was a Roman Catholic Priest and one of the five illegitimate children of John of Gaunt, the third son of King Edward III. When his parents were married, he was declared legitimate by Pope Boniface IX and legitimated by Act of Parliament on February 9, 1397. This barred him from the succession to the English Throne, yet he held high positions in the government for 43 years. After being Bishop of Lincoln, he was appointed the Bishop Winchester in 1405. He held the position of Lord Chancellor of England off and on several times in his lifetime depending who was ruling England. After a failed appointment, Pope Martin V finally appointed him as Cardinal in 1425, and in 1426, he was made Papal Legate of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia. He was then directed to lead a Fourth Crusade against the Hussites heretic in Bohemia, which he did and the Battle of Tachov was on August 4, 1427. The English forces lost the battle. From about 1435 to 1443, he controlled the English government of the weak King Henry VI. He attempted unsuccessfully to negotiate an end to the Hundred Years War between England and France. In 1443, he retired from politics, and in 1444 a truce was made between England and France, thus his policy was at last successful.
