Willis worked with his brothers in the family carpentry business for a time, before health problems force him to give up that trade in the early 1900's. Staying in the field of wood working, he started a picture frame business in Monmouth. From 1909 until his death in 1915, Willis was the weight master for the City of Monmouth. Willis was running for the position of city treasurer at the time of his death, which occurred just prior to the election.
Willis was 13 years younger than his wife, Arcadia, who was nearly 40 years of age when the couple married. Although no children were born to the couple, they did adopt a daughter, Florence T. Hoy. Arcadia preceded Willis in death by 15 years. Daughter Florence remained with Willis until his death, and later married John William Fair. Willis was also preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Edwin, Clarence, and George Jr. He was survived by brothers Charles, Fred, Frank, and Egbert, and sister Emma. He was buried in the family plot, near his parents, brother George Jr., his wife, two nephews (sons of Charles H. Hoy). Buried there later was his brother Charles and wife, Lillian.
