Roland R. "Ron" Welsh, 70, of Oblong, died at 12:26 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18,2007, at his residence.

Mr. Welsh was born Oct. 4, 1937 in Flora, the son of Walter R. and Evelyn G. (Hunley) Welsh. He married Dorothy A. "Dot" (Boos) Welsh on Feb. 7, 1959. She preceded him in death on May 28, 2005. He was a high school teacher for 33 years, a football coach, track coach, and in his early years a basketball coach, working for 26 years with Oblong High School, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Oblong, Robinson Elks, was an avid golfer at Quail Creek Country Club, and was a member of Illinois High School Football Assoc., and was inducted into the Hall of Fame on April 7, 1990. He did his undergraduate studies at S.I.U. in Carbondale, and received his masters from E.I.U. in Charleston.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Candy Welsh and Bill W. and Susie Welsh and Thomas P. and Amanda Welsh; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet R. and Ron Mitchell and Deanne M. and Craig Weatherford; one sister, Eleanor Staley; two brothers-in-law, Jim and Ruth Boos and Steve and Lottie Boos; two sisters-in-law, Sister Jane Boos and Kathy and Bill Fearday; eleven grandchildren, Sydney and Sam Mitchell, Michelle Shaffer, Danielle White, Whitney and Carleigh Welsh, Derek Hester, David Hester and Gavin Weatherford, Ashley Schnizlein and Brady Welsh; six great-grandchildren, Blaze and Breeze Shaffer; and Christian, Leighanna and Kaitlyn Schnizlein and Destiny Hester; father and mother-in-law, Leonard and Pauline Boos; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Letty Homan.

Preceding him in death were his parents and wife.

Funeral services were held at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Robinson, with Fr. William Overman and Fr. Jeff Goeckner officiating.

Burial was in Oblong Cemetery, Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong was in charge of arrangements.
