Louis Thomas Gunnis Leonowens was the son of Thomas Leon Owens and his wife, Anna Leonowens, of 'Anna and the King of Siam' fame. He came to Siam with his mother in 1862 in order for her to teach the wives and children of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand). He later returned there as an adult, from Canada where his mother had settled, and became a captain in the King's cavalry before entering the teak trade and founding a Thai trading company that still bears his name, Louis T. Leonowens Limited.

He was married twice. His first wife, Caroline Knox, was the youngest daughter of Sir Thomas George Knox, British consul-general in Siam from 1868 to 1879, and his wife, Prang Yen, a Siamese noblewoman. They had one son, Thomas George Knox Leonowens (1888–1953) and a daughter, Anna Harriett Leonowens (1890-1978), who married Richard Monahan. Following the death of his second wife, he married Reta May in 1900. They had no children.
