Franklin and Sarah Hildreth Butler, he was named after his father, maternal grandfather and great grandfather. Graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, class of 1877. Served with the 9th U.S. Cavalry in Texas he resigned to study law which he persued (sic) at the Columbia Law school in New York. He was admitted to practice in April, 1881. He died in Gloucester, Massachusetts on the day that he was to have gone into partnership with his father, Gen. Benj. F. Butler.

Ben Israel Butler graduated at the U.S. Military Academy and, as his father wrote, "was directed... to accept a lieutenantcy (sic) in a regiment of colored troops which was stationed on the Plains, that he might have, in addition to his instruction at the academy, the knowledge of the movement and care of troops in actual service." He served for one year as such. He later studied at Columbia Law School and was admitted to the bar, but died on the day that he was to go into partnership with his father in Boston. (pp. 79-81)
