Civil War Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 4th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services in the present campaign before Richmond, Virginia and in the Shenandoah Valley".
