Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company A, 13th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on the 2nd Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 2, 1863). His citation reads "Gallantry in the recapture of 4 guns and the capture of 2 additional guns from the enemy; also the capture of a number of prisoners". This action happened at the tail end of Confederate General James Longstreet's attack on the left flank of the Union Army. Captain Lonergan's regiment had charged from its position on Cemetery Ridge to Emmitsburg Road in the retaking of the 4 guns of Wier's Battery C, 5th United States Artillery. His Medal was issued on October 28, 1893.
