Army Pfc. Covert was assigned to the 104th Transportation Company, 13th Corps Support Sustainment Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. He died in Al-Sahra from injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident. While growing up, Dwane could have gone one of two ways – he had his share of troublemaking but he graduated from Kenmore East High School in 2005. By October 2006, he decided to act on his dream of entering the military. His basic training was at Fort Jackson, South Caroline and had Advanced Individual Training from Ft. Bliss, Texas. On July 8, 2007, Dwane arrived in Theater and less than four months later was killed when he and other soldiers were cleaning up debris around a military base. He picked up a cylindrical object that was sticking up out of the ground and it exploded. The irony is that he had been held back from going out on another mission and was working around the base because he was due back home for the birth of his baby. Fellow soldiers remember Dwane as popular, friendly and outgoing. He was a loving husband and father to his wife, Jeanette, young son and a daughter on the way. The young man who was quite a handful growing up got his life together for his family – he was a great guy and amazing friend.
