Charles E. Oakes was born January 23,1863 in Union,Warren Iowa and died December 13, 1935 in Collins, Drew Co. Arkansas. His parents were Abraham Oakes (1831-1912) and Cynthia Ann Batten Oakes (1832-1888). He was one of seven children. Mary Jane Oakes(John Heckethorne),Ann Oakes (Frank Benell),Frank (2nd wife Bertha),Della who died young, Effie (Gilbert Hall) and Arthur (1st wife Lizzie) (2nd Eva) (3rd Louise).
He married his first wife, Sarah Louisa Sipes March 19,1885 in Canton, McPherson, Kansas. They had two sons, Chester Willis and Floyd Earl and a baby girl named Dora Lou, born November 22, 1893.
He married Bertie Edna about 1895 in Kansas. They had 3 children, Wilmer Lee Oakes, Rilla Irene Oakes Arnold, John E. Oakes.
Not long after the Oakes moved to Kansas Emory met,and married Lou Sipes, whose family was moving to western Kansas to settle on a government claim. Emory and Lou decided to go to. They got their teams and covered wagons,supplies and belongings and set out overland to western Kansas, settling between Richfield and Syracuse. Their first house was made of sod. After about 1 year their first child, Chester Willis, was born on July 13.Almost exactly 2 years later another son, Floyd Earl was born July 26. Sometime after Lou passed away a few weeks after Dora was born. Emory had met 16 year old Birdie Edna Von Fossen at his sister Dellas house and were married April 2,1894. Dora was reared by her grandparents, Birtie helped to raise Emorys oldest boys and they began a family with the birth of Wilmer Lee, June 8, 1897. Two years later Rilla Irene was born on December 1,1899 and then May 18, 1901 John was born.
They moved to Arkansas September 28, 1916.
