US Congressman. He was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1848 and was a judge of probate, 1852 to 1856. During the Civil War, he served as Captain of Company G, 17th Regiment, Michigan Volunteers and was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1863. He was elected sheriff of Lenawee County in 1874 and served until elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving from 1883 to 1887.
