The Thornton's moved from Missouri to Oregon on a wagon train in 1865. They first settled in Yamhill Co. then in Oak Creek, near Roseburg, Oregon.

He married Frances Mathewa in Roseburg, Oregon 30 July, 1863.. They had the following children. Martha(Barker,Redemer), Mary William, Pamela9 Erickson/Errakson), Ethel (Koufasimes/Koufas, King), Charles, Clarence, Chleone, and Gracia(Wells)

Josiah Jeptha Thornton, 89, died Friday at his home 609 Sixteenth Avenue East. He was born near Clarksdale,
Mo., June 8, 1851, and came to Oregon in 1865 with his parents by oxen. He lived near Sheridan, and moved to Oak Creek, near Roseburg, where he spent the greater part of his life. He attended Wilbur Academy and taught school in Douglas County. After retiring from his farm in 1915, he moved to Roseburg, and came to Eugene in 1923
On February 1, 1880, Mr. Thornton married Francis Emaline Matthews, who died three years ago. To them were born nine children, five of whom survive: Mrs. Martha Boyd of Eugene, Will J. Thornton of Concord, Cal., Mrs. Ethel Koufas of Multnomah, ClearenceE. Thornton of Yoncalla, and Mrs. Gracie Wells of Everett, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
