Soccer Player and Coach. He played with Bratislava as a defender in the highest Czechoslovak league before World War II and for the same team in the Slovak league during the war, playing once for the Slovak national team. After the war he became coach at his old club three different times between 1949 and 1965, winning three Czechslovak championships. In 1966, he moved to Austria where he took little known Wacker Innsbruck from the second division to the top of the Austrian league. In 1968, he was chosen as the coach for the Austrian national team. He led them until 1975, when he retired due to health reasons, though he continued to work with the Austrian Federation in an advisory capacity for another 4 years. In 1974 he came within a game of taking Austria to the World Cup, losing to Sweden 2-1 in a playoff game after the two teams finished qualification tied on points and tie-breakers. In 2009, a street was named for him in Vienna.
