After a very long illness, Bernice Blease Rumble finally succumbed. She died peacefully Dec. 1, 2007. Her family, ranging from New York to Florida, were all present during her terminal moments. Bernice, from the time she was a little girl, was an actor, a singer and a dancer. She was born in South Carolina, but grew up in Washington, D.C., where she took part in "Uncle Bud's" Saturday radio program and later acted and participated in performances in various venues and particularly at the "Red Barn." Following graduation from Central High School, she worked as a dental assistant for a well-known dentist, Dr. Beebe, while attending GWU. Bernice also visited her Aunt Virginia and Uncle Earle Zirkle in Rocky Mount, N.C., and from time to time took part in among other things, the "June Germans." Bernice met and married Richard Rumble, a naval person in June of 1951. In the course of her travels with her husband, she gave birth to four lovely children - Richard Jr., Rebecca, Daniel and Laura. She also continued her acting and singing in local theater and choir groups as well as functions closely associated with her husband's duty station. She worked very hard in researching and tracing the Rumble clan as well as her own, particularly when she and her husband were stationed in the UK. She was a member of the British Geological Society. Bernice also was a member in good standing with the United Daughters of the Confederacy as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution. Upon her husband's final duty assignment and his subsequent retirement, Bernice joined the Little Theater of Virginia Beach, was active in the Tidewater Dinner Theater, the Shakespeare Festival and several movie productions originating in Wilmington, N.C. She was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Bernice was an active member of the Star of the Sea Choir until her illness and subsequent hospitalization prevented her from further participation. As a doting grandmother, she followed with affection and interest all the doings of her grandchildren - Christian Ann Rumble of Baltimore, Sarah Kelsey and Hannah Skotty of Greene, N.Y., Ann Mason Rumble and Elizabeth Edwards Rumble of Richmond, Mathew Edwards and Megan Ann Rumble of Jacksonville, Fla., Morgan Alain and Reghan Elisabeth Slater of Virginia Beach. In addition to her love of the stage, she will be remembered as having a strong will, a seeking spirit and a fiercely loving heart for her husband, children, grandchildren and her heritage. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held in Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at noon. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Star of the Sea Choir for the acquisition of new choir robes, the Little Theater of Virginia Beach or charities of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
