Meek, originally from York County, S. C., had moved to Bradley County, Arkanasas in the late 1850's; he was the son of Eli Meek and Martha Louisa Starr Meek;his grandfather was Capt. James Meek who fought at the battle of Kings Mountain during the first revolution; James was married to Susan Jane Meek on 10.18.1855; she was born Dec. 20,1837; Enlisted 8 Jan 1863 at Warren, AR. On Sunday, 27th September,1863, Meek died of the wounds received at the battle of Chickamauga, on the 20th; Meek was a member of Capt. Amzi T. Meek's Co, 2nd Regt, Arkansas Volunteers, Liddle's Bridage, Army of Tennessee. Meek lost two other brothers during in war, Edward Stewart (killed during the Atlanta campaign) and Major Amzi Theophiliss Meek, killed at the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee. His sole surviving brother was John Rufus Starr Meek, who is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Bradley County, Ark.
James Marion's children were John Starr Meek born June 28, 1858 (died 9/4/1863, buried at Calvary Cemetery in Bradley County, Ark.), Mary Alice Meek ("Departed this life Aug. 13, 1877; AGED 17 Years & 7 Mos.") buried at the same Calvary Cemetery in Bradley County, Arkansas, and Harriett (Hattie) Jane Meek (married Abe Carroll of Ennis, Texas)...born Aug. 5, 1856 and died Jan. 1, 1942 (buried in Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis Texas). Hattie's children with Abe were May Hill d.1/17/1972, Allene Marion b. 2/14/1895 in Ennis, Texas and died 9/6/1978 in Dallas, Mrs. C. V. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. F. W. Crone, Mrs. M. K. Lightfoot, Miss Hattie Carroll, and a son, Abe Carroll, Jr.
