Mary was the daughter of Nathaniel Bishop and Fanny Winsor. She met Ambrose Burnside while he was in the Army and stationed at Fort Adams in Newport. They were married on April 27, 1852. After his well-known service in the Civil War, they lived on Benefit Street in Providence and on Edgehill Farm in Bristol. Mary was Rhode Island's First Lady from 1866 to 1869.
