At about 0355 hours (3:55 a.m.), Mr. Richard Thomas was enroute to work and noticed a fire behind the pharmacy at 2132 Central SE and a subject laying unconscious in the alley near the fire. Garver was severely burned and pronounced dead at the scene. Subsequent investigation showed signs of an accelerant in Garver's clothes.
A group of juveniles poured alcohol or a similar substance on the homeless man, who was well-known in the UNM area as a pan-handler and eccentric, and who had made a crude shelter against the coldest night of that year so far, in the alley. He had lain for many hours, severely burned, either unable or unwilling to cry out or seek help for his injuries.
No one was ever charged or punished for this heartless crime. He was buried in an unmarked paupers' grave, without ceremony.
