Industrialist, Philanthropist. Born in Chicago to Swedish immigrants, he founded the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in 1966, which came to be known as ARCO and was the seventh largest oil company in the nation. He is best known for ARCO's 1968 discovery of the giant Prudhoe Bay oilfield in Alaska, the largest ever discovered in North America. Not just a business man, he was president and then chairman of the Aspen Institute over the course of 30 years. Concerned about global warming, he founded the Worldwatch Institute, the International Institute for Environment and Development and the John Muir Institute of the Environment. By 1986 his ranches and other properties in Texas and New Mexico covered some 2,000 square miles and had made him the largest individual landowner in the United States. He died in Roswell, New Mexico.
