U.S. Senator. Educated at Maine Wesleyan Seminary, he taught school in New Bedford, Massachusetts, (1833-37) and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1837. There he was principal of Benton School, (1838-47), comptroller of St. Louis, (1847-50), Postmaster of St. Louis, (1854-58), member of the board of police commissioners, (1873-76) and a member of the board of freeholders charter of St. Louis, in 1876. In 1877, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lewis V. Bogy, serving until 1879. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 80.
