Leonidas Polk, a graduate of West Point, was appointed Bishop to the Southwest (an area that included Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana) in 1838, and in 1841 was named the first Bishop of Louisiana. He selected Thibodaux as his home as the owner of Leighton Plantation, and in 1843 organized a Parish under the name of St. John's Church. The land for the church building, and subsequently the cemetery, was donated by George S. Guion, father-in-law of Governor Francis T. Nicholls (for whom the local university is named). The Guion family graves are among the oldest in the cemetery, and Nicholls is also buried here. Bishop Polk laid the cornerstone of the church on January 1, 1844; St. John's was consecrated by the Bishop on Palm Sunday, March 16, 1845. It is the oldest Episcopal church building west of the Mississippi River.
