New Mexico Governor. In his home State of Georgia, he was noted for serving in a variety of political roles. He was a member of the Georgia General Assembly in 1830, Mayor of Columbus Georgia, (1838-39), served in the Georgia State Senate (1838-40, 45) and was the U.S. Consul to Cuba (1841-42). During the Mexican-American War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in command of U.S. Army Volunteers. After the war, he was appointed the U.S. Federal Indian Agent for the newly acquired territory of New Mexico. In 1851, President Mildred Fillmore appointed Calhoun as the 1st Governor of New Mexico Territory, serving until 1852. After his term, he died while preparing for a trip to Washington D.C.
