William Asberry Fowler was born in Gilmer County, Georgia on March 11, 1831 to John Fowler and Elizabeth 'Betty' Page Fowler.

He enlisted in the Confederate States Army on May 3, 1862 in Rabun County, GA. He served as a private in Company H, 1st Regiment, South Carolina Artillery.

After the Confederate Army surrendered, he was paroled in Greensboro, NC in accordance with the terms of a Military Convention entered into on the 26th of April, 1865 between General Joseph E Johnston, Commanding Confederate Army and Major General W. T. Sherman, Commanding Union Army in North Carolina.

He married Mary A Bynum and they had eleven children. He died Jun 29, 1907. He was 77 years old.
