US Congressman. He graduated from Yale in 1817, attended the Litchfield Law School, and became an attorney in Danbury in 1818. Whittlesey served in local and county offices, including Fairfield County Probate Judge. In 1836 he won election as a Jacksonian to the US House of Representatives seat left vacant by Zalmon Wildman's death. He was reelected to a full term as a Democrat in 1836 and served from April, 1836 to March, 1839. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1838, and returned to his law practice. In 1846 Whittlesey moved to Pheasant Branch, Wisconsin, (now part of Middleton), where he practiced law and owned a farm. Whittlesey was one of Middleton's first residents, and when it was incorporated he served as the first Chairman of its Town Council. He was also active in several business ventures, including the founding of the Madison and Beloit Railroad. Whittlesey remained active in politics, serving in the Wisconsin Senate from 1853 to 1854. Congressmen Elisha Whittlesey of Ohio and Frederick Whittlesey of New York were his cousins.
