While the death of Captain E. P. Barnes which occurred at his late home at Coles Point on Thursday of last week was no surprise it brought sincere sorrow wherever he was known. Captain Barnes moved here from Accomac long years ago, and by his honest and lovable ways and his untiring industry soon won to an unusual degree the love and confidence of our people. While Captain Barnes' educational advantages were very limited, as a thinking, practical business man he was a great success, and influenced for the better alls o fortunate as to know him. While he was a merchant, he was also a very successful farmer, and it was wonderful how our moderate neck land responded to his generous treatment. Many blades of grass flourishing where none grew before, and his crops were the admiration of all who saw them. Captain Barnes was an humble childlike Christian and a power for good in the Methodist church. Being a steward, a Sunday school man and a temperance man when it cost much to be. His daily life and influence for Christ will continue to make this world better that he lived. He was buried near his late home on last Friday evening, his pastor, Rev. W. G. Burch, conducting his funeral service in the presence of a large crowd who knew and loved him. Captain Barnes is survived by his widow, one daughter and one son, and these and his other relatives have the love, sympathy and prayers of our people." Edward Parker Barnes' burial site was later changed to Carmel Cemetery, where it is now. The first burial site was on family property at Coles Point.
