Religious Figure. He is believed by Christianity to be the adoptive Father of Jesus of Nazareth. He was born to Jacob and Heli and was of the house of David. He was betrothed and later married to Mary. He was by trade, a carpenter. Within the Roman Catholic tradition, Joseph is the patron saint of various things and places. Pope Pius IX proclaimed him the patron of the Universal Church on December 8, 1870. Saint Joseph is honored by the Feast of Saint Joseph the Workman on May 1, introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955. The principal feast day of Saint Joseph is March 19, Saint Joseph's Day in the Roman Catholic tradition. While the Bible does not identify a specific site where St. Joseph's bones were laid to rest, an ancient tradition states that the tomb of St. Joseph, now empty, is in the Valley of Josaphat. St. Jerome, on the other hand, was of the opinion that St. Joseph's tomb is within the boundaries of the Garden of Gethsemane.
