Vaselo was the fourth of seven children. Her father performed the delivery at their home on Jefferson Street when the midwife didn't arrive on time. Her father named her after his sister, Vasilike Stavros Panagakos. On June 23, 1938, she was baptized at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary in Wilkes-Barre. She attended Greek school and the James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre.
Vaselo's first job was working as a waitress at her father's restaurant – The Faust – located on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. She was working at Percy Brown's Cafeteria in Wilkes-Barre when she met ♥♥ Glen Thompson Kline ♥♥, the love of her life. They eloped on June 26, 1954. Rev. Warren A. Loesch performed the wedding at the parsonage of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wilkes-Barre, and his wife Marion was the witness. The couple raised two daughters and two sons.
Between 1959-1961, Mom and Dad owned and operated The Friendly Pork Store at 630 North Second Street in Fullerton, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. On October 12, 1960, she cut off the top half of her right index finger while grinding hamburger. One of the customers drove her to the hospital emergency room so Dad didn't have to close the store. Because Senator John F. Kennedy was in Allentown campaigning for President that day, their trip to the hospital was delayed due to street closures. While the driver was pleading with police to let their car through, Senator Kennedy came over to see what was going on. He shook Mom's hand, wished her luck, and asked the police to let them drive through the barricades.
My Mom was known for the wonderful pies and cakes she baked – beautiful as well as delicious! For birthdays and holidays she would cut-up cakes into various shapes and decorate them to create a butterfly, reindeer, teddy bear, race car, or other special treat. Her donations were always popular at the church bake sales. She baked the wedding cake for my sister, Ethel, and for my friend, Helene. She also baked bread, so the sandwiches for our school lunches were always made on homemade bread.
When we lived in Wescosville, Mom planted a large vegetable garden every year. We also had apple, pear, and cherry trees, so we had plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. In the Fall, she would can vegetables for the winter and make applesauce, jams, and jellies.
Though she was a stay-at-home Mom when we were younger, she took a job when I was in high school as a cook at Mosser Nursing Home in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. She later worked for Saucony Shoe Manufacturing in Macungie as a seamstress. She was last employed by Day-Timers in East Texas, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. I still use the Day-Timer planner she gave me when she worked there.
