US Congressman. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1931 and was the Commonwealth Attorney of Appomattox County, Virginia from 1932 to 1948. In 1948 he was elected as a Democrat representing Virginia's 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Patrick H. Drewry He was reelected to the twelve succeeding Congresses, and served from 1948 1973.
